Planned Parenthood Global Partners (PPGP) was launched four years ago.  Drawing on Planned Parenthood’s role as both a service provider and an advocate, PPGP has two complementary goals:

  • To improve family planning programs in the U.S. and abroad
  • To build U.S. support for international family planning assistance.

PPGP partnerships are collaborations between Planned Parenthood affiliates and international family planning providers, conceived as mutually beneficial, reciprocal relationships.  Partnerships yield wonderful opportunities for affiliates to augment their programs, expand their advocacy efforts and reach new constituents in their communities – all while contributing to the success of their international partner.

Such partnerships are imperative.  According to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), world population will grow from 6.3 billion to 9.1 billion by 2050.  The United States is the fastest growing industrialized nation in the world.  Although Americans constitute only five percent of the world’s total population, we consume 25% of the world’s resources and produce 75% of the planet’s hazardous waste. Therefore, any increase in our population can have adverse affects around the world.  Our efforts to recycle, conserve energy and water, or protect land and wildlife habitat from development will be thwarted, if not totally undermined, if we do not also work to curb population growth here and abroad.  Assistance is especially needed now as more than one billion young people aged 15-24, the largest cohort in history, are entering their childbearing years and because the rates of many sexually transmitted infections are rising.
