Pence Amendment Defeated

Pro-family planning members of Congress stood up and supported Planned Parenthood and the critical role we play in providing reproductive and preventative health care services to low-income, uninsured and underinsured women.

Mike Pence (R-IN-6) filed the following amendment to the Labor Health and Human Services and Education Appropriations bill (Labor H):  “None of the funds made available under this Act shall be available to Planned Parenthood for family planning projects under Title X of the Public Health Services Act.”.  The Pence amendment was nothing other than an unconstitutional, unfounded attack on the nation’s leading source of reproductive health care information and services.

 Details on the Vote:

A final vote of only 189 voting with Pence and 231 against it, illustrates that the majority of Congress stands with Planned Parenthood, the leading reproductive health provider and the vital services we provide to millions of low income women yearly.    This reflects a pick up of 32 votes over the 199 core pro-family planning votes in the House. .

Immediate Action Needed on an Anti-Planned Parenthood Amendment: Tell ALL OF Your Members to Vote NO AND SPEAK ON THE FLOOR AGAINST THIS ATTACK!
Speak Out Against Anti-Family Planning Politicians!

The anti-family planning politicians are at it again. Last night, Congressman Mike Pence introduced an amendment that restricts critical family planning funding. We've seen family planning funding restrictions before -- but this one is different. Rep. Pence's amendment specifically seeks to ban Planned Parenthood  health centers  from receiving family planning funding.

This amendment isn't just unconscionable, it's unconstitutional.  Its an attempt to punish Planned Parenthood for standing up for women's health and rights and justice!

Each year, more than five million women receive comprehensive family planning services at family planning clinics that are funded by Title X. These women are predominantly poor and uninsured -- two-thirds have incomes at or below the federal poverty level. Title X provides a critical safety net for these women, and without it, many women would go without the health care they need and deserve.   For many of these women, Planned Parenthood is the only provider they know and trust.

Time and time again, anti-family planning politicians put politics ahead of women's health. It's time to put a stop to these extremist policies. Call your Member of Congress  NOW and ask him or or her to VOTE NO on the Pence Amendment to the Labor-HHS spending bill and to speak on the floor against this attack on Planned Parenthood.

Not  Sure About What  to Say?

These talking points can help!  Remember, your Representative wants to know how people in his or her district feel about this amendment.  Let them know you that oppose the Pence Title X amendment.

·        I am calling to urge you to vote NO on the Pence amendment to the Labor-HHS Appropriations bill that would prohibit Planned Parenthood from using Title X (ten) family planning funding.

·        For many women, and especially those in rural areas and underserved communities, Planned Parenthood is their only source of health care.

·        The vast majority (97 percent) of services provided by Planned Parenthood help people to prevent unintended pregnancies, test and treat for sexually transmitted infections, and screen for breast and cervical cancer.  As the law requires, no Title X dollars are used for abortion services.

·       The Pence Amendment would single out Planned Parenthood and would sabotage the reproductive health care services for those who need them the most.

·        I urge you to vote NO on the Pence amendment.

Your calls make a huge difference – and it only takes a few minutes.
